Similar photographs from the same shoot have been tentatively dated to Muybridge's 1872/1873 experiments at Sacramento (cf. Haas. Muybridge: man in motion, p.57).
Considered to be very early examples of shutter photography.

Muybridge photographed renowned "Occident" race horse owned by Leland Stanford at Union Park Race Course in Sacramento in 1872, 1873, 1876 and 1877 for purposes of rapid animal locomotion studies. The present collection of images is believed to be from these or similar experiments.
